What is Rejuvenation?
Asphalt rejuvenation is the process of restoring chemical properties that have been deteriorating since the moment new asphalt was laid. An asphalt rejuvenator penetrates the asphalt well below the surface to chemically revitalize and protect the asphalt binder by replacing the tars and oils lost due to oxidation. The process also seals the pavement against air and water, thereby slowing oxidation, which extends the effective service life of the pavement.
With the poor quality of asphalt being manufactured today, the life cycle of asphalt has gotten even shorter, thereby increasing the need to adopt a cost effective maintenance plan for asphalt surfaces.

Unlike conventional asphalt emulsion sealers that are water based, asphalt rejuvenators are made from coal tar blended with aromatic oils and solvents. This very sophisticated chemistry is designed to benefit asphalt composition. The chemistry was developed in the 1970’s, but had limited distribution due to the lack of manufacturers and marketing, until just a few years ago.
Many third party independent studies have tested rejuvenation chemicals due to their interest in maintaining their asphalt assets including the U.S. Army Corp, Canadian Army Forces, U.S. Department of Defense, and various DOT offices.
